Road milling machine removing old asphalt near a curb

Asphalt Resurfacing — Auckland & North Shore

When your asphalt is worn but structurally sound, resurfacing restores it for a fraction of the cost of full reconstruction. Overlays, milling, and basecourse replacement by A&E Contracting & Pumping Ltd.

Resurfacing Options

The right approach depends on the condition of your existing asphalt

Asphalt Overlay

A new layer of asphalt (25–40mm) applied directly over the existing surface. Best when the underlying pavement is structurally sound but the surface is worn, oxidised, or has minor cracking. Most cost-effective resurfacing option.

  • Tack coat bonds new to existing asphalt
  • Raises surface level slightly — edge transitions managed
  • Can be done in a single day for most driveways

Mill & Fill

The top layer of old asphalt is milled (ground off) to a set depth, then fresh hotmix is laid to the original level. Ideal when surface is badly deteriorated but the base is good. Maintains existing levels — no raised edges to manage.

  • Milled material can be recycled
  • Existing levels maintained — no threshold issues
  • Fully removes cracked surface layer

Full Reconstruction

Complete removal of existing asphalt and basecourse, then full rebuild from the sub-grade up. Required when both surface and base have failed — evidenced by extensive cracking, rutting, or subsidence. This is a rebuild, not a resurface.

  • Complete removal of failed pavement layers
  • New basecourse to engineered specification
  • Proper sub-grade compaction and testing

Resurface or Replace?

Not sure which approach is right? Here's a simple rule of thumb: if the base is solid and cracking is only in the top 25mm, resurface. If there are potholes, deep cracks, or the surface has sunk, you likely need at least partial reconstruction. We'll assess and advise honestly.
